Get to Know Your Oils: FLOWERS & RESINS

This month I have been teaching a lot about the potential for healing on multiple levels. When it comes to the process of emotional healing, there are so many essential oils that can be called upon to act as a tremendous support team.

For that reason, instead of choosing a single oil to highlight, I wanted to write about 2 specific groups: Flowers & Resins.

When it comes to cleaning up old, emotional wounds, opening the heart, releasing anger and finding forgiveness, essential oils distilled from flowers and tree resins are there to love and support you on your journey. These oils not only help us to be more compassionate, empathetic and receptive to others, but they also help us to be more loving and accepting of ourselves.

FLOWERS – Emotional Healing & Heart-Centering

Think about all the reasons you give flowers as a gift, or all the reasons you love having flowers in your home. They offer color, beauty and aroma. They are vibrant, welcoming new ideas and creativity. They represent spring, along with its new growth and fresh development. We give them as symbols of love, to beg forgiveness,  as sympathy and as celebration.

However you analyze it, flowers are symbols of emotional health and healing. They bolster love, friendship and deep, personal relationships. The oils produced from flowers are no different, except they contain some chemical components proven to help relax the nervous system; calming the mind and soothing the heart.

These oils are precious as it may take up to 60,000 flowers or more to produce 1oz of oil (which accounts for the cost). There is a lot of labor and a lot of love that goes into every bottle of any flower essential oil. These oils should be used with that preciousness in mind.

Because of the concentration of plant material, flower essential oils tend to be cloying if used in too large an amount. A single drop goes a very long way, so use them sparingly. Often, even 1 or 2 drops per 1 oz of carrier oil is more than sufficient; remembering that your blend may get aromatically stronger with time.

Some of my favorite flower oils for emotional healing are rose, ylang ylang, jasmine and neroli. I highly recommend having at least one of these oils on hand in times of need.

Rose – Rose Otto, Rosa x damascena

As many of the flower oils will have similar therapeutic properties, let’s just choose to explore rose a little bit further. The chemistry of each flower oil will be highly individual, but the therapeutic applications will be common to many flowers.

CHEMISTRY

  • Monoterpenols (about 50%), mostly citronellol, geraniol & nerol
  • Hydrocarbons (about 33%), mostly nonadecane

PHYSICAL

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antifungal
  • Antibacterial
  • Antispasmodic
  • Cicatrisant (able to heal wounds/scars)
  • Calming to the nervous system

EMOTIONAL

  • Counterbalances feelings of alienation
  • Encourages healing from rejection, betrayal & grief
  • Soothes anger
  • Opens the heart
  • Boosts self-esteem
  • Encourages love

MENTAL

  • Counteracts deep depression & anxiety
  • Counteracts insomnia
  • Encourages deep, restful sleep

SPIRITUAL

Rose, like most flowers, resonates strongly with the 4th chakra:

  • Heart Chakra – offers a capacity to love (self & others); helps integrate spiritual and earthly goals; helps us let go of our egos; helps us find beauty in all things; helps us create nourishing, supportive, intimate relationships

Suggested Recipe

Because flower oils are so precious, so powerful and so aromatic, I find it very beautiful to use them individually; enjoying the unique bouquet and healing ability of each one.

This is especially true if you are new to essential oil use. It is always helpful to start with simple recipes, until you really understand the benefit and aromatic profile of each oil.

OPEN MY HEART (natural perfume)

  • 10ml jojoba (or any carrier oil of your choosing)
  • 1-2 drops rose (Rosa x damascena) essential oil

You may substitute ylang ylang, jasmine or neroli for rose, in this recipe.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Fill a 10ml roller bottle (available online in multiple colors) with a carrier oil of your choice (I prefer organic jojoba from The Jojoba Company)
  • Carefully drop 1 drop (or maximum 2 drops) of your preferred flower oil into the bottle
  • Cap the bottle, shake and enjoy (rolling the heart-opening perfume on your chest, throat, neck, temples, back of the ears and fronts of the wrists)

10ml bottles are the perfect size for a customized blend. They are extremely portable and easy to use anywhere.

This blend has a shelf-life of about 2 years (but you may go through it in a matter of weeks).

Please keep away from children. It is always best to keep your blends away from direct sunlight and extreme heat.

RESINS – Wound-Healing & Emotional Support

In nature, there are specific trees and shrubs that when cut or injured, will produce a gummy secretion known as resin. Resin is the tree’s wound-healer and that is the primary therapeutic property for which humans utilize it.

Historically, resins and their respective essential oils have been prized as valuable gifts. The hard resin is often burned for ceremonial, meditative and/or religious purposes, while the oil can be used for general emotional support and as an aid in healing physical and emotional scars.

Some of the best known examples of resinous oils are frankincense, myrrh, elemi, opopanax and balsam copaiba.

Frankincense – Boswellia carterii

Just like flowers, the resins also have similar properties. Let’s just choose to explore frankincense, in order to better understand the therapeutic application of these oils.

CHEMISTRY

  • Monoterpenes (about 80%), mostly a-pinene

PHYSICAL

  • Analgesic (pain-killer)
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Cicatrisant
  • Supports beautiful skin
  • Supports a healthy immune system
  • Supports respiratory health

EMOTIONAL

  • Encourages emotional healing
  • Opens the heart

MENTAL

  • Helps eliminate tension headaches
  • Clears the mind
  • Focuses the attention
  • Supports a meditative practice
  • Allows for reflection & introspection

SPIRITUAL

Resins will tend to resonate very well with the 1st and 7th chakras.

  • Root Chakra – grounding; ensures personal safety; supports a healthy physical body; ensures basic needs of survival
  • Crown Chakra – supports wisdom & awareness of higher consciousness; helps liberate us from limiting
patterns; connects us to limitless possibilities
